In 1967 I bought five acres of land in Wayanad and started organic farming cultivation. But from 1980 I started using chemical fertilisers, in order to increase my yield – this was until 1993, when my twelve- year- old daughter died from cancer. I started thinking and reading about the disease and I read so many books about the side effects of the use of chemicals in farming. I started to think that my fertilisers could have killed my daughter. So I started using organic methods in my farm again. I had a lot of support from local NGO’s and some of my friends who are also interested in these methods.
I studied more about the use of traditional seeds and seedling and I got a good yield by using this method, while the diseases in my plants also reduced. I also received training from Organic Wayanad on zero - budget farming and started using this too. This method reduced my cost of production and the plants became healthier. Now I am very satisfied with my cultivation practices because I get safe food for my own consumption and I can also give to others also.
